You bought a US eSIM, received the QR code, and started setting it up. But your phone still has no service, and your carrier says the initial activation must take place in the United States.
If you are in another country, the phone's location may be the missing piece. Some carriers need it to connect to a US cellular network before they can complete registration.
DroidDesk lets you rent a physical Android phone located in the United States and control it remotely. On an eligible device, you can install your own eSIM and work through setup while you are abroad. The eSIM is installed on the rented phone. Explore how DroidDesk works.
Why a US eSIM may not activate outside the United States
The initial setup requirement can be expressed like this: you must be physically located within the United States during the initial setup so your phone can connect to local network towers and finalize registration.
To understand where activation can get stuck, separate the process into three stages:
- Buying a plan: you order service from the carrier.
- Installing the eSIM: the phone downloads the digital profile.
- Connecting to the network: the line completes the required registration steps and becomes ready to use.
Receiving a QR code or seeing an installed profile does not necessarily mean all three stages are complete. Tello, for example, explicitly requires an initial connection to a US cell tower. AT&T also states that activation requires a connection to its network and cannot be completed outside the country. Tello's activation requirements, AT&T's activation FAQ.
Which US carriers require activation in the United States?
Requirements vary by carrier, plan, and activation scenario. Starting a new line, replacing an eSIM, and enabling international roaming can involve different rules.
| Carrier | What to check |
|---|---|
| Tello | Initial eSIM activation requires a connection to a US cell tower while in the United States. Official FAQ. |
| T-Mobile Prepaid | Activation through the Prepaid eSIM app requires being in the US, a compatible phone, and an internet connection. T-Mobile's instructions. |
| AT&T | Its activation FAQ says the device must connect to the AT&T network and cannot be activated abroad. Check Prepaid compatibility and installation steps separately. AT&T's FAQ. |
| Verizon | Official support responses, including a Prepaid eSIM case, state that activation must happen in the US. Confirm the procedure for your particular line. Verizon Support's response. |
| US Mobile | International roaming requires the line to connect to a US network and record domestic usage first. This is a roaming setup requirement. US Mobile's roaming guide. |
| Google Fi | Requires initial US activation and primarily US usage. Service is offered to US residents, with specific overseas activation exceptions for eligible military and State Department users and qualifying dependents. Google Fi's terms, activation exceptions. |
Activating a Tello eSIM from abroad
Tello's published guidance requires the phone's first connection to its US network to happen in the United States.
A compatible DroidDesk phone located in the US can provide the physical device and local network access needed for that step. Before renting, check the handset's compatibility with Tello and its eligibility for installing your own eSIM. The carrier's other account and activation requirements still apply. Tello's guidance on activation abroad.
Activating a T-Mobile Prepaid eSIM
T-Mobile's Prepaid eSIM app supports compatible iPhone and Android devices. It requires an internet connection and says users must be in the US when activating service.
For setup on a DroidDesk phone, choose a rental plan that allows installation of the required app. This guidance applies specifically to the Prepaid eSIM app; other T-Mobile account and device changes have their own procedures. T-Mobile Prepaid eSIM app.
US Mobile: the eSIM is installed, but roaming does not work
For US Mobile, installing the profile and preparing the line for international roaming are separate steps. The carrier says its network needs to detect a connection to US towers and some domestic mobile data usage before roaming will work.
If your profile is installed but roaming is unavailable, check whether the line completed that initial domestic setup. Turning on Data Roaming alone may not be enough. US Mobile's native roaming instructions.
What about Mint Mobile, Visible, Cricket, and other carriers?
Many US carriers offer eSIM, but their supported devices and installation methods differ. Mint Mobile offers app or QR-code installation, Visible uses its app, Cricket supports selected compatible unlocked Android phones, and Boost Mobile publishes a dedicated eSIM device list. Mint Mobile, Visible, Cricket, Boost Mobile.
An online activation guide does not establish that first-time activation works from every country. Check the exact scenario: a new number or a number transfer, the specific phone model, and the device's location.
Some providers also have account eligibility requirements. Spectrum Mobile, for example, requires Spectrum Internet to sign up. Google Fi limits service to US residents. Renting a phone does not satisfy those separate conditions. Spectrum Mobile, Google Fi.
How DroidDesk helps with US eSIM activation
With DroidDesk, you choose a real smartphone in the United States, connect from your computer, and perform setup on its screen.
You can be abroad while the phone carrying the eSIM is within the US carrier's coverage area. The handset's physical location makes a local cellular connection possible. Available models and locations can change, so check the device catalog before planning your activation. Browse DroidDesk phones.
This addresses the technical need for a phone on a US network. The carrier still determines account eligibility, permitted use, and whether activation succeeds.
If you are weighing the approach in general rather than the US-specific requirement, see renting an Android phone to activate an eSIM remotely.
How to install your eSIM on a DroidDesk phone
Before buying the eSIM, check the selected phone's IMEI with the carrier. Built-in eSIM support does not automatically make a device compatible with every network. Verizon's BYOD compatibility guidance.
For DroidDesk setup:
- Choose a US phone labeled Bring Your Own eSIM. Installation is unavailable on 1 Hour rentals, requires the paid eSIM option on 3 Hours or 1 Day, and is available on eligible 1 Week rentals.
- Save a Wi-Fi network and enable automatic reconnection.
- Open Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM on Samsung.
- Upload the carrier's QR image, restart the phone so it appears in the gallery, and select it during setup. Alternatively, enter the carrier's SM-DP+ address and activation code manually.
Follow DroidDesk's eSIM installation guide.
Once the line registers, check the functions included in your plan, such as an incoming text, an outgoing call, or mobile data. Keep the Wi-Fi connection needed for remote control available.
Can a VPN activate a US eSIM outside the US?
A VPN changes how internet traffic is routed. It does not put a phone abroad within radio range of a US cellular tower.
When a carrier requires an initial local cellular connection, a US IP address alone cannot satisfy that requirement. This follows from the distinction between internet routing and cellular coverage. Google Fi also specifically recommends turning off a VPN when troubleshooting one of its activation errors. Tello's tower connection requirement, Google Fi's activation troubleshooting.

Will the activated eSIM appear on my personal phone?

If your goal is to use the number on your personal phone abroad, check the transfer and roaming requirements before the initial installation.
Does every US eSIM include a US phone number and SMS?
